Love and loss are recurrent themes in many traditional songs - hence the title of this recording. The album represents a long engagement with Irish traditional song and singers, as well as related traditions, and is a snapshot of the repertoire and styles of song I particularly resonate with. It also reflects my connection to both solo and accompanied practice. I am particularly anxious to acknowledge the influence of iconic singers such as Delores Keane, Sarah Makem and Tom Lenihan here. Allowing the melodies and words of these important cultural artefacts to shine through was my ultimate goal, and I'm really grateful to the musicians for facilitating this.

about

There are many songs with this name, and indeed a similar theme - the narrator is eavesdropping on two lovers in a rural idyll, and the man is about to emigrate. There are two Blackwater rivers in Ireland, one in Munster and one in Ulster. Given the origins of my learning of the song, I like to think that this is about the Ulster Blackwater, which flows through counties Armagh, Tyrone and Monaghan. I learned this from the singing of Peter Dundon, from Askeaton, Co. Limerick, one of the best and most unassuming singers I have ever known! Peter learned it from Rita Gallagher, the great traditional singer from Co.Donegal, who recorded ti on her 1997 recording, Easter Snow.
