Love and loss are recurrent themes in many traditional songs - hence the title of this recording. The album represents a long engagement with Irish traditional song and singers, as well as related traditions, and is a snapshot of the repertoire and styles of song I particularly resonate with. It also reflects my connection to both solo and accompanied practice. I am particularly anxious to acknowledge the influence of iconic singers such as Delores Keane, Sarah Makem and Tom Lenihan here. Allowing the melodies and words of these important cultural artefacts to shine through was my ultimate goal, and I'm really grateful to the musicians for facilitating this.

about

I first became aware of this song through the singing of the wonderful Delores Keane from Caherlistrane. We are from the same part of Co. Galway and I have been especially influenced by her early recordings with De Danann and John Faulkner. Craigie Hill was also recorded by the great Paddy Tunney in 1966 and is widely regarded as an Ulster song. The story starts in the same way as a number of others on this recording - the narrator is wandering through the countryside and overhears "two lovers talking" then goes on to tell the couple's tale. It has always been the melody that particularly attracts me to this song. It's important for me to mention, however, the reference to purchasing a plantation, which, of course, was frequently associated with the horror of slavery. I believe it is essential to highlight the historical use of words and phrases which may seem innocuous in a song, but which can signal serious and troubling social, political and economic issues.
