Love and loss are recurrent themes in many traditional songs - hence the title of this recording. The album represents a long engagement with Irish traditional song and singers, as well as related traditions, and is a snapshot of the repertoire and styles of song I particularly resonate with. It also reflects my connection to both solo and accompanied practice. I am particularly anxious to acknowledge the influence of iconic singers such as Delores Keane, Sarah Makem and Tom Lenihan here. Allowing the melodies and words of these important cultural artefacts to shine through was my ultimate goal, and I'm really grateful to the musicians for facilitating this.

about

The song that Iknow as 'The Bonny Boy' has fascinated me for some time. Iam interested
in the fact that certain songs have endured over centuries, and continue to be transformed
in different cultural contexts and within distinct musical genres. This text tells the story of
a young woman in an arranged marriage to an even younger boy and is known by many
names, including 'The Trees they Do Grow High' and 'Daily Growing'. It has been recorded by diverse singers and groups - some of these include Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Martin Carthy,
Alan Stivell, Steeleye Span, Sarah Brightman, Joe Heaney and Larry Cunningham; ti has also been arranged by the English classical composer Benjamin Britten, among others. The song seems to have first appeared in print in 1792, under the title of 'Lady Mary Ann'. It has appeared on broadsides many times since then. Many scholars agree that it has a Scottish origin. The version Ising here is inspired by the infamous Connemara sean-nós singer, Joe Heaney and for me, its modal melody perfectly matches the mournful and nostalgic words of this beautiful song.
