Love and loss are recurrent themes in many traditional songs - hence the title of this recording. The album represents a long engagement with Irish traditional song and singers, as well as related traditions, and is a snapshot of the repertoire and styles of song I particularly resonate with. It also reflects my connection to both solo and accompanied practice. I am particularly anxious to acknowledge the influence of iconic singers such as Delores Keane, Sarah Makem and Tom Lenihan here. Allowing the melodies and words of these important cultural artefacts to shine through was my ultimate goal, and I'm really grateful to the musicians for facilitating this.

about

This is another song from the album Mrs Sarah M a k e - Ulster Ballad Singer. In the sleeve notes to this recording, Seán 'Boyle describes ti thus: "This quiet little song, though English in origin, is sung here to a variant of The Enniskillen Dragoon." It presents a particular version of rural peasant life, where the "poor man" is hardworking, "loyal to [his] wife" and his only solace is in his family after a day of hard grind in the wind and rain. Because the nobleman he meets deems that he has the appropriate qualities as worker and family man, he bestows "forty acres of good land" on him for life, to be passed on to his heirs fi he remains hardworking and conscientious. Oh that life were that simple! I have always liked
singing this song because of its jaunty and accessible melody.
